This year marks the 10th year that river’s end bookstore and the Oswego YMCA have joined together to present the Harborfest Kids Fun Run. The event will be held Saturday, July 24, and children from ages 4 to 12 are invited to participate. There is a minimal entry fee and the first 150 registrants will receive a free T-shirt.
“This year, we are partnering with Oswego Reads,” said Bill Reilly, owner of the river’s end bookstore, in Oswego. “We’re encouraging the entire community to read “Three Cups of Tea” by Greg Mortenson and to help us raise money for Pennies for Peace to build schools in Pakistan and Afghanistan for young boys and girls.”
Pennies for Peace is a program through Central Asia Institute (CAI), which was co-founded by Greg Mortenson. Two dollars of each registration fee will go to Pennies for Peace.
The start time for the fun run is 8 a.m. at the Oswego YMCA Armory.
To register, pick up an application at the front desk of the Oswego YMCA, 249 W. First St. Registrations will be accepted up to July 23, the Friday before the race. There will be no registration on the day of the race.
“The fun run will be a great way to start the day on the Saturday of Harborfest,” said Bill Reilly. “We hope you will join us and help our children become ‘Fit and Literate.’”

Terry Gorman, administrator of St. Luke Health Services, was caught reading “Three Cups of Tea,” the official book of this year’s inaugural Oswego Reads’ event. The community-wide reading initiative will culminate Oct. 28 with a visit to Oswego by the book’s author, Greg Mortenson. Tickets for this event, to be held at SUNY Oswego Campus Center, will go on sale in mid-July. For more information and to keep up with all of the events, go to www.oswegoreads.com. The community read is sponsored by Pathfinder Bank.
