Bishop’s Commons Joins Community Read Project
A group of avid readers at Bishop’s Commons have joined together to participate in the community wide experience by reading the NY Times best seller “Three Cups of Tea” by Greg Mortenson. Under the direction of Book Club volunteer Julie Smith, the group meets each Monday to read the book that tells the story on one man’s mission to promote peace, one school at a time.
“Our residents are excited to be part of the community read initiative,” noted Senior Living Coordinator, Julie Chetney. “They have embraced the book, and look forward to sharing it with our young neighbors at Riley School this fall.” Intergenerational activities to read the children’s version of Mortenson’s story entitled “Listen to the Wind” with an elementary class from Riley School are being made for September.
The Bishop’s Commons Book Club has been meeting for over 3 years each Monday afternoon to share stories and books. “The community read has since created even more interest among residents to embrace literacy and participate in discussion regarding the issues in the book,” Chetney added.

Look Who’s Reading – Maia Czarnecki, Oswego High School Senior
Maia Czarnecki, Oswego High School class of 2011, recently read the young adult version of “Three Cups of Tea,” the official book of this year’s inaugural Oswego Reads’ event. The community-wide reading initiative will culminate Oct. 28 with a visit to Oswego by the book’s author, Greg Mortenson. Tickets for this event, to be held at SUNY Oswego Campus Center, are on sale now online at www.oswegoreads.com. For a chance to win a pair of tickets and learn more about the community read, visit the Oswego Reads table during each Thursday’s Oswego Farmer’s Market from 4-8 p.m. It is located in front of the river’s end book store. The community read is sponsored by Pathfinder Bank.
